UNN Signs Landmark Agreement to Build AUG East Submarine Cable System

Bandar Seri Begawan, 17 July 2025 – Unified National Networks (UNN) has announced its investment of a new submarine cable system named the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable system. This endeavour is a collaborative effort with global consortium partners including Singtel, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, ARTERIA Networks, Chunghwa Telecom, DREAMLINE, Globe Telecom, and Telekom Malaysia that have signed the construction agreement.

AUG East will span 8,900 kilometres across key regions from Singapore to Japan, including a branch extended to Brunei. To ensure the successful execution of this project, the AUG East Consortium has engaged NEC Corporation as the contractor for constructing the cable system which is expected to complete by the end of 2029.

Chris Phan, Acting CEO of UNN, stated that, “Brunei’s connectivity to the new Asia United Gateway (AUG) Cable system through Unified National Networks (UNN) marks a significant milestone in strengthening the nation's digital infrastructure. This high-capacity subsea cable enhances network resiliency by providing a diversified route for international traffic, reducing dependency on existing pathways and ensuring more reliable connectivity. With increased bandwidth capacity, Brunei is better positioned to support gigabit-speed internet, enabling seamless digital experiences for consumers and businesses alike. Additionally, the AUG connection establishes vital footprints to multiple international Points of Presence (POPs), reinforcing Brunei’s role as an emerging digital hub in the region. This strategic move not only supports national digital transformation goals but also opens up new opportunities for innovation, investment, and regional collaboration.”

The introduction of a further cable system is designed to meet Brunei’s increasing demand for international bandwidth, driven by the global expansion of digital services and generative AI technologies. The cable complements existing submarine cables by enhancing redundancy whilst preparing for the eventual retirement of legacy cable systems. The project initiative further aligns with UNN’s strategic vision to establish the nation as a prominent regional ICT hub, enhancing connectivity, expanding coverage, diversifying networks and improving resilience as part of facilitating the digital transformation objectives of Wawasan 2035.

By strengthening Brunei’s digital backbone through diversified subsea infrastructure, the AUG cable system safeguards future connectivity and reinforces the nation’s strategic role in regional digital development.
