UNN Rural Development Project Expands with UNNity for Local Community Programme

10 February 2025 @ UNN Mumong Exchange - On 26 April 2024, UNN successfully connected residents in isolated areas of Kg. Bang Taong, Kg.Kukup, Kg. Buau, Kg. Biadong Ulu, Kg. Sukang and Kg. Melilas, providing them with fixed fibre broadband and mobile services despite the absence of commercial power (off the grid) in these rural areas.

In a groundbreaking move toward technological innovation and sustainability, UNN has implemented a hybrid solar power system at its base stations, ensuring uninterrupted 24/7 connectivity in remote areas. Prioritizing progress over profit, the company has fully embraced solar energy to bridge the digital divide, bringing rural communities closer to the rest of the country.

To date, the rural villages are still off the grid and they live in hard to reach places which may lengthened travel time for UNN technicians and engineers to reach these villages for any maintenance work required at these base stations.

In consideration of these challenges, UNN ideated the UNNity for Local Community program in May 2024 to procure services and support from the rural residents for basic maintenance tasks, such as grass cutting, clearing fallen leaves, inspecting solar panels, and ensuring gates and padlocks are secure to prevent unauthorized access.

As a start, a signing ceremony took place on 10 February 2025 at UNN Mumong Exchange between UNN Acting CEO Chis Phan and UNN Senior Vice President Operations Zulyada'in Hj Ibrahim Fisal with Rantai Anak Jawa and Hazlyn Bin Abdullah who have been recruited to carry out the scope of the programme.

Through this collaboration, UNN reinforces its commitment to build resilience and promote inclusive connectivity, while simultaneously empower the rural communities by upskilling them with a fair compensation. This effort also supports UNN’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitment by reducing the travel frequency for UNN technicians and engineers to reach these remote areas for basic maintenance tasks whilst simultaneously reducing carbon emissions by at least 107.2 kg per trip, amounting to a potential monthly reduction of 643.2 kg of CO2.
