05 April 2025 - The growing and evolving threat of cybercriminals has become a significant concern. In response, UNN is committed to continuously strengthening the framework to protect the country and its data from cyber threats.
"We build the infrastructure that connects people. Key and crucial to the equation is trust in the connectivity and reliable infrastructure we provide, enabling MSMEs and other tech companies to be more innovative.” expressed UNN Acting CEO Chris Phan.
To further support this commitment on providing a trusted ecosystem, UNN was onboard to work together with Big BWN Project (Big BWN), imagine, and Progresif on addressing the significant gap found in digital literacy awareness among the youth (ages 7-17 years old) in Brunei Darussalam.
In response, Belia Pintar Siber, a digital literacy program, was curated as a collaborative effort to educate primary to secondary students nationwide on how to protect themselves from cyberbullying and scams, empowering them to become digitally resilient. This program was conducted as an effort promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Design & Technology, Art, Engineering, and Mathematics) education under the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre.
The students were taught about online safety, misinformation, cyberbullying awareness, identifying scams, and ethical digital behaviour. These critical topics align with Belia Pintar Siber program’s objectives of equipping youths in schools nationwide with essential digital skills, empowering them to thrive in an ever-evolving digital world. Hence, this program also supports UNN’s continuous effort to bridge the digital divide and drive Brunei becoming a Smart Nation.
Since its launch in October 2024, Belia Pintar Siber has successfully been implemented across seven schools nationwide; Sekolah Menengah (SM) Muda Hashim, SM Sayyidina Hasan, STPRI, SM Lambak Kiri, Sekolah Rendah (SR) Semabat, SR Selapon and SR Lamunin. As a result, this initiative has reached more than 500 students both from urban and rural schools.
Three remaining schools; SR Bukit Udal, SR Rataie and SM PJN will also be receiving this digital literacy program after Hari Raya celebration. However, this program does not stop here, Big BWN Project Lead and Founder Noor Hafizah Rashid highlighted “The engagement, enthusiasm, and awareness sparked through this pilot phase highlight the urgent need to continue and expand the program beyond May 2025.”
"By expanding this initiative, we can reach more schools, refine the curriculum to tackle emerging digital challenges, and further enhance students' ability to think critically, navigate online spaces safely, and contribute positively to the digital world," Hafizah Rashid added.
